2002 World Cup - Korea/Japan

(For those of you too impatient to actually read more than one paragraph before skipping down to the comment section, this actually *does* have to do with Lineage, so please read the whole thing first.)

Soccer (or as the rest of the world calls it, Football) is a very important sport worldwide (except in the US for some reason). More fans show up for Round 1 of the World Cup than for the Superbowl. In case you've had your head in a closet for the past week, South Korea has pulled off quite an amazing feat.

First some important facts. #1 South Korea has never ever won a game in the World Cup. #2 The hosting country never lost it's first game. South Korea was destined to be the first country to both host the World Cup and lose the first round, but they proved everyone wrong with a 2-0 upset over Poland. On top of winning, this was also the second shutout in World Cup history.

As I said, soccer is a very important sport - so most Americans may not be able to understand what I mean when I say that Korea is celebrating like crazy! Imagine the excitement in Chicago after the Bulls won the NBA Finals or in Los Angeles when the Lakers won except *across an entire country*. It's quite amazing (I personally love "underdog proves the world wrong" stories).

With that being said, NC Korea (https://bbs.lineage.co.kr/lineage/new_announcement/notice/read.asp?ListNum=679&PageNum=1), as part of the celebrations, gave anywhere from an n-zel to a b-dai for characters whose names were a variation of the Red Devils (the South Korean FIFA mascot) or the coach and players on the team. Yes, it's *that* important.

actually amer, some of my friends did use grease pencils on thier cars with the names of the players, the score and who scored, then cruised around town for about 4 hours after they won. bunch of weirdoes if u ask me.
anyway, i wonder if we get the same thing since U.S. pulled a big upset? if so im gonna go start a new character^^

Well you did forget to mention U.S. huge upset over Portugal this morning...

What this means thought is that there is a huge showdown between the U.S. and South Korea in about a week or so. The winning team will probably go on to round 2...

Luckily most Americans do not care about soccer or else this could incite even more of the Korea/U.S. ridiculous tension that happens on the Lin servers...

zinnestro...US has always had problems with soccer matches with S.Korea.....
US...can't match up to Korea's speed....in the Korean game....Poland couldn't keep up....US is fair but I do not think they will win....but It will be a good effort.....GO RED Devils!!!!<GO episode 11>!!....p.s. Zinnestro is a HATER!...I will pk him later...

miral - No, it was not a slow news day. However, NC-Korea made a big announcement about this, and I thought it would be fair if English-speaking Lineage people could know about it too.

metroid05 - Read the whole post before you comment. It has to do with Lineage because people got b-dai out of this for being named after the soccer team. In other words, it was an event.

DarkFlameX - The game is from Korea. You are playing a Korean game. The people who create episodes are mostly in Korea. Anything new comes from Korea. To complain that 80% of Lineage is about Korea is like going to Burger King and screaming about how the whole menu has to do with Burgers. Well, duh, it's a BURGER PLACE. How about instead of complaining, you go do something that I can report. I don't *invent* the news. I report it.

Excellent rebuttle Amer, DarkFlameX, chill out and go play. I for one am thrilled to see a bit of the world cup flavor reaching Lin. Struck up a few conversations on global but then people started yelling "no more soccer!!". As a side note, this is kinda why I wanna see the States do poorly, the US has very little love for the game, kind of small of me I'll admit, but the soccer world has very little love for the States.

DarkFlameX you do not know how lucky you are. ZcabronZ was a so so webmaster, but he rarely had news until it over and done with. Amer keeps up with the changes , overseas , and gives a huge insight into what is coming.
Amer has been such a great job being a webmaster. Its his damn site.

Amer on a personal note, when I thought the site had reach its peak of reporting, you throw this at me. I read the comics mostly, but I clicked over to CNN to read more about the S.Korea and USA teams playing soccer.

I for one am going to be up and watching that Korea-USA match. I'm excited for it, and it's good to see that people who play lineage are into more than just lineage. It's refreshing to be able to talk about real life with the people in lineage.

For all the people who don't care about the world cup, then leave your comments to yourself. There are many people who do care and it behooves you to stay quiet.

And to all the haters and doubters of Korea in the World Cup, don't be surprised to see Korea go really far. I know that the Korean people take a lot of pride in co-hosting the Cup this year, and will not disappoint their fans. GO KOREA!!!

Korean's have the crapiest refree this world ever seen! Brasil vs Turkey game was so stupid.. Red and yellow cards for no reason, a penalty given for a foul that was outside of the penalty area. Basicaly that Korean refree gave the game to Brasil. Brasil was going to lose points against Turkey. So what NC should do now is, if you have the name of that refree you should get banned :)
Btw many people loved Brasil till that game. I dont thin Brasil going to win WC. Nice playing(acting) Rivaldo! Weldone! ....

I am canadian and i am seriously getting disgusted with stupid north american habits. In winter its hockey, in summer its hockey, in fall its hockey, and, wait, oh yeah in spring its hockey too. WHY DO YOU LIKE HOCKEY SO MUCH IT IS EVERY DAMNED YEAR AND ITS ALWAYS THE SAME BORING STUFF!!!

What's this about Spanish selection being dirty players? you mean like italians that broke the noose of a player with an elbow hit "accidentaly"? (hate them still for that >.< )

BTW i am not a football addict (rare kind in spain ;) ) but i must say that wc is the only matches i really like watching. And for god's sake, can the spanish team win this year? they only loose ONE match every 4 years (seriously) and it's the one that makes them leave the WC. It's really weird.
And for the rivaldo acting demonstration... well, i'd give him an 7.5, he was laughing all the way in the floor (for god's sake, how unprofessional acting) heheheh. And they should have charged him like 18k �, that's about what he earns every DAY. (this is what i call FREAKING GOOD drop rate ;) )

hahaha! soccer is the best sport EVER! kinda sad to see some teams that don't deserve to be in WC being there and LOSING *ahem* but overall soccer's the best sport. And i agree, in North America they spend billions of dollars just advertising for american football and hockey and yet soccer is taking over, they just want to ignore it and hope it'll go away, for gods sake, there were hockey commercials at half time in the US - Portugel Match. And one more thing, koreans really played good and they deserved to win but neither korea nor US is gonna go far, although i'd like to see korea advance in the cup simply because they're the host and the match's just more fun when you see 100k ppl cheering for a team (btw, i like to mention that more ppl tuned in to watch the prelimininary games of WC @ 4:00 AM than they did for Super Bowl). So go Football (yes football not american football), btw why is american football called football when they mostly use their hands?

I really like the women's beach volley ball.. ESPN coverage of the World Cup was basically "The World Cup began today... back to you Pat." I been reading, never hurts to expand your hozions and watch something different.

I think that maybe the "Texas Texans" NFL football team would have to win the superbowl before we got anything out of NC-Austin.

The reasons Americans aren't into soccer as much as the rest of the world, is because we have our own sports leagues here with the best pleyers in the world in them. NFL (american football) is an primarily American game. The best players in the world are in it. NBA (basketball). Also a North American sport (invented in Canada, perfected in US). NHL (Hockey). another primarily North American game. and last but not least, MLB (baseball). "America's Past-time." So we have 4 sports in North America that have the best players in the world in their respective sports. Soccer, well, there isnt enough attention for us to share it with Soccer. Sorry, but that is just the way it is. No matter where you go, different cultures have different likes. American culture (most the people anyways) just doesn't care for Soccer.

I know of no SOCCER player with a $200 mil contract if so let me know. Do your soccer players live in a manison or some THIRD world shack? From what i know from FACTS that a baseball player gor a 7 year $200 mil dollar contract. Thats money not no little soccer ball endoresment. You are so wayyyy off. I'll take my American sports over soccer any day. You poor welfare soccer players.....LOL

I hope the US wins the match against Korea. I have nothing against Korea. I just want the US to win for a change of pace. Maybe that will increase support for the game in the States. That way there would be something else for me to watch on TV instead of just Hockey, which I love as well.
They are going to be playing in Teagu. My grandparents used to live there. Sometimes it can get darn hot there during the summer. Should be a challenge for both teams.

For all you US soccer (euro football) haters, we have a great team this year at the WC. We got our first win since two WC�s ago in '94 when we hosted it. Our forward attackers DaMarcus Beasley and Landon Donovan are two youngest players on the team at 20 and are raising stars. These two took part in two of the three goals we scored on Portugal (favored to win the game). We actually have a good squad this year, we lack world status and experience but we have something that other countries don't. The Fighting American Sprit, with that, our raw talent we have a good chance at going deep in to this years WC. I'm going to be up 2 am Pac time to watch the Korean vs. USA game and I'm going to cheer for both teams, I know its going to be a great game. I'm also cheering for the Japanese. Both the Korean and Japanese teams have speed as their main assault and were both thought as teams to do poorly this year.

So all you Soccer haters, keep in mind, this is the fastest growing sport in the country and the most played sport throught out the world. I love Baseball/Softball, Football, Hockey, Basketball, race cars and Rugy, but Soccer tops them all. Total money spent through out the world on the sport and players, teams and clubs, leagues and championshios. Our sports don't even come this close to the status Soccer(Euro Football) does.

Side note, Football(American Version) is growing in popularity in Europe. The NFL European Football league. Big cities host teams like Amsterdam, Berlin and Barcelona.

I have one question? Why do you all (including Amer) think that Soccer is the most popular sport in every other country, except the U.S.A??? Its Not!!

Is soccer the most popular in Canada? NOPE! Hockey is!!
in Austrailia?? NOPE! Rugby is!!
in India?? NOPE! Field Hockey and Criket is!!
How about one of the Hosts Japan?? NOPE! Baseball is supposed to be more popular! according to a survey
Same survey said Basketball was more popular in China than soccer.
How about baseball in Cuba?? Most popular!
What about drinking in Ireland and Russia???
And in South Africa RAPE is the national past time right now!!.......

I just do not understand this common ignorant statement about soccer, it is NOT the most popular sport in ALL other countries around the world.

Rivaldo makes 100k in british pounds a week, not to mention contracts to adidas, nike, and whatever else he's got from those companies(what do u call that? spare change?), and he's recognized everywhere from his home brazil right around the world to asia... as far as i know, none of my friends in hong kong has even seen a real baseball or A.Football, much less name some players =P

omg stop dissing American sports! jezze what the hell we do to you we have our own sports as europe has there own. Hell i could care less bout soccer(football) or really any other sport besides Track and field. Sigh i played some soccer but could not get into it cause of bad kness. You want to try a real sport try Mountain Bicking now that requires you to be strong and fit. I lov emountain bickng even more then track adn a field. As a matter of fact im going to go down waldo canyon again just for another blast =]

Sports aren't about how much money the players get paid or how popular they are to their home country and the rest of the world... soccer is a very physical sport and much more exciting than any US/Canadian games. And I think a few of you should just shut up about it cuz your favorite sport is sitting on your fat ass playing Lineage which doesn't really matter out there in the REAL WORLD -_-^
