GDC 2003 notes
It's Day 2 of the GDC (Game Developer's Conference) and there were some interesting things being said which GameSpy.com reported that I wanted to post up:

Ten Reasons You Don't Want to Run a Massively Multiplayer Online Game
This was taken from a talk by Gordon Walton, who ran online games for Kesmai, helped to build Ultima Online, and recently launched The Sims Online. It should give you some insight on what it's like to be on the other side of the game and hopefully at least empathize with what some people put NC through. :)

Why is Korea the King of Multiplayer Gaming?
This was from a panel discussion with NCSoft-US CEO Robert Garriott, the Sony Online Entertainment VP of International Operations Cindy Armstrong, the Director of Business Development for Nexon (another successful Korean MMOG creator) Won Il Sue, and finally J.C. Herz, author of the book "Joystick Nation." Hopefully, reading this will give you some insight into why Lineage is designed the way it is, and why Korean players are more successful at it (it's because it was designed for the way games are played in Korea - socially)

Finally, GameSpy reports:

NCsoft announced that it has renamed Realm Interactive's Trade Wars: Dark Millennium to Exarch. Exarch (pronounced ex'-ark) is a online game that combines a sci-fi futuristic setting with fast-paced action RPG combat elements set in an virtual persistent world. Players explore, battle and take on quests in multiple environments including mystical forests and alien catacombs. The game also melds classic melee weapons and armor such as chain mail and long swords with futuristic armaments such as power armor and plasma guns. Set thousands of years in the future, Exarch follows the fall of the Empire that ruled it, leaving the surviving Exarchs (the ruling governors of the Empire) in a struggle for power in a universe where monsters such as mutants, undead, robots and dragons dwell together with terran races in imperfect disharmony. It should also be noted that Exarch will feature the input and creative concepts of comic book artist Joe Madureira, creator of the comic book series Battle Chasers and former artist of Marvel's Uncanny X-Men.

I think Blizzard, possibly with NCSoft's help
will succeed in doing an MMORPG correctly.

Blizzard is currently working on WoW
"World of Warcraft" which will basically
be Blizzards first real MMORPG.

It's a shame they didn't make the StarCraft
universe into an MMORPG, but what can you do...

Between Blizzards excellent game balance awareness,
engaging content, artwork, support as well as NCSoft's
experience with MMORPG Servicing, and Blizzards
experience catering to Dial-up users. I think WoW
will be an excellent game, that might offer
serious competition to NCSoft's own L2 offerring,
especially since Lineage is still virtually unknown
outside of South East Asia.

WoW will begin Beta this Fall.

Blizzard doesn't need anyone's help to succeed. I think it's funny that they're using Warcraft and not Diablo, for their first MMORPG. It seems to me like Diablo would be tailored for this sort of thing.

diablo is not MMORPG

max 8 ppl per server
it's just like a multiplayer game..but not massive

plus... it's boring
go lvl up without a real purpose
ppl can just buy stuff and kick ya arse who is stupid enough to spend hours and hours lvling up
and there are bots..

smart ppl : get bot.. get items.. sell for money
stupid ppl: "uh...I dunno .. I'll just take out my Creditcard and buy stuff from smart ppl.. I'm too dumb"..

conclusion: diablo2 is a sux game for sux ppl

re-read drathen's post there shin0bi he didnt say that diablo 2 was an mmorpg he was saying the playstyle, figures and themes would have been better for an mmorpg than warcraft's. (as in to make an entirely new mmorpg)

well, thats what i got out of it. only drathen can say for sure what he meant.

*Edit*

NC misses out on #9 imo.

Trust me blizzard will do much better alone without Nci's help..

And I dont mean to be insulting but who cares about the korean model for gaming. I play american games and games that are english language introduced in the Usa.And I dont live in korea I live in the Usa(though im not from here originally). To me the USA is it if you dont succed here you havent succeded in my eyes.

USA USA!

$165 million USD a year and still not successful in your eyes, #17? and you wonder why so many people hate americans. hell i live in america all my life, am of english decent, and still hate 90% of americans. self-centered dips***s who think that "their way is right no matter what." you play american games that are (inserts the words "of the") english language and yet play lineage and post here (or just post here, showing interest in lineage to some extent).

You miss the point of what im saying. Alot of Companies arent american in origin but yet they succeed in the Usa as well as abroad. thats all im saying. Im saying that the American market is very important. You have alot of people taking about lineage doesnt need to succeed here. Im saying that lineage does need to succeed here if they are going to make the claim that they are the worlds largest mmorpg. They cant claim that unless they conquer the North American Market as well as the Asian market.

guess it depends on how you decide to measure the "success" of something. i would measure their success by how much money they make, because that is a solid figure that can be put on paper.
