January 25, 2003 04:30 pm ET - research by Lineage - US
Internet Outages
The US Lineage service was shutdown tonight from approximately 2:18am CST to 5:10am CST as a result of the denial of service attack that affected a large number of sites across the entire Internet. Information on that attack can be found here and on other news sites. The servers have been returned to service at this time and no further downtime is expected as a result.
That attack got LC's ISP too :( -amer

Remember people, this are not hackers, this as script kiddies and wanna-be's with nothing better to do.

Real hackers spend their time coding and doing cool stuff, not messing around. Forget the hollywood idea, most of them are bearded, smelly, overweight and love penguins (you know what I mean)...

Roland, choose a poor password in your linux box and it will make a better ddos box than windows, given a good bandwidth. Windows behind a good proxy/firewall is as safe as it can get (believe me, I run a company with 200 or so wintel boxes).

BTW people out there who to learn (where I point ppl in irc programming channels I manage, how can I become a hacker) should read:

http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/index.html

Especially the first one.

What is a hacker?

It's not like it matters which software you use. This box is a NetBSD machine running Apache and mySQL and it still went down. The Internet (and I know you know this QuickShadow_, not directed to you) is not a person-to-person phone call. Every machine between you and the destination matters. When you lag on Lineage, it's probably not your fault or NC's fault. It could be a crappy machine in between that you don't have control of.

And to add to QuickShadow_'s comment about "real hackers". Real hackers are very difficult to identify. They never brag. If you see someone bragging about something they did, that's a script kiddie. Real hackers just mess with stuff to learn for their own benefit and to compare notes with other "real hackers". Script kiddies post all over message boards "CHECK OUT MY HACK" because they want attention. Real hackers seek knowledge, not attention.

A "hacker" being portrayed like a criminal is a huge misuse of the word. Hackers never try to bring down the Internet to flex their muscles (if they ever do damage, it's because of some cause they believe in). The evil-doers, those are script kiddies. A hacker can be anyone from someone who takes apart their phone to "learn how it works" to AlFansom who tried every spell and SP to "learn about its damage." Hacking is a way to learn, not a criminal act.

The people who cause DDoS are usually bratty kids who steal the knowledge that a hacker discovered and put it to evil. They usually have no idea what the hell they are doing, and that's why they get caught. It's like the person who sets something on fire to see its explosion (usually get hurt because they have no idea what is about to happen) vs. the demolitions expert who knows exactly what will happen and blows things up because it's their job (like imploding buildings, mining, construction, etc)

Sorry, I had alot to say on this matter. I think the general public misusing the word hacker like its a bad thing is a total insult to those of us who have been around the Internet before anyone every thought it was cool. :)

Hehe roland =) another ms fan. Microsoft sql takes down the internet, the governing bodies blame the network IT people for not fixing every little free security hole patch on a weekly basis, and the "hackers" for taking advantage of it. And the crackers get the last laugh.

Moof!

Amen amer, last paragraph my feeling precisely. Very well put. Also hacker is (as you imply) not necesarily a computer related thing - the word comes from the complex pranks students made on MIT a few years ago, I believe. So, a hack can be on any career - its an attitude thing mostly.

Ita, its not an MS problem... their software is buggy, but its the best in many things. Linux is buggy (just very well containerized). Cisco routers are buggy. Macs (OS X more) too. Notice a trend here? Computers are buggy! :) ... long discussion, been there, done that... I believe, in the end, we can thank MS for bringing an open environment (yes, open) where anyone can develop for it cheaply, hardware is free (before MS and the PC standard, you had to pay royalties and ask permission to program and just buy parts from one company - closed and expensive). We need to thanks MS for providing an easy, cheap alternative, even if it was crap (I totally hate windows 9x, NT and family (2000, XP) are quite decent well configured. I don't like linux zealots who think its the best OS out there save none - I see it as the best OS for some applications, not for others. Computers are tools after all, and professionals as me are here to provide solutions with these tools.

Whatever... </rant>

Again, read the link I pasted, it is very interesting.

people mistake the words "hacking" and "cracking" alot also. and amer is right in every aspect of that post. well, for the most part.

at any rate im too fragile right now in lin to play. suffering another lag death, i have lost some desire to build it back. so, i will be offline friends for some time, while i regrow some hair on my head.

yes quickshadow it depends on what you want your computer to do, as to what OS would best suit you. like, i would not use redhat to play video games hehe.

Hey QuickShadow,

If you already haven't done so, do a search on honeypots or honeynets. Sounds like this would be right up your alley. Or just goto http://www.honeynet.org/
There are also some pretty cool books out on the subject.

everyone has their own opinion on what "hacker" means... but whether you or i like it or not, the conventional meaning has become broad, and if you'd like to refer to something more specific, maybe you should come up with a new word

imo, hacking generally means using technical knowledge to get around rules. that could mean exploiting bugs in client-server apps, or changing asm code in a program that runs on your pc that you have total control over, or whatever..

so i would consider a script kiddie to be a "hacker" if they had decent technical knowledge, but that doesn't mean they're a good hacker or aren't an immature brat... i would rather not, but i don't control how broad the meaning of the word is, it's just a matter of convention

sometimes ppl use "hacker" to refer to account thieves.. i don't agree with this because it has a totally different meaning. it doesn't require any technical knowledge to fire up a keylogger on a public pc. i think people use "hacker" in this case because how their account got stolen is mysterious to them and it happened on a pc, and sometimes they don't want to admit it happened partially because of their ignorance or irresponsibility

that being said, the hollywood idea of hackers is still way off. there was one movie that was more realistic (for SOME hackers) that had robert de niro in it who dealt with some hacker who played quake.. but anyway, the idea of being able to get around rules that you're not supposed to be able to get around, not just a matter of choosing whether u want to break the rules or not, is lofty and so it appeals to hollywood... whatever, i don't really care

oh and by the way, the SQL worm probably wasn't done by a terrorist, there are a lot of ppl who do it just to see if they can
