korhiyen sent us a link to a news.com article which is an interview posted today with Robert Garriott, CEO of NC Interactive (not Lord British, but his brother).

Here's a response I thought was pretty interesting:

Are you looking beyond "Lineage" too?
Yes, we're designing lots of new products--some that are targeted specifically to the "Lineage" customer and some that might be more attuned to U.S. customers off the bat. On the "Lineage" side we've been working on "Lineage Forever," a continuation of "Lineage" with totally new graphics. It's an attempt to take the whole "Lineage" system and add a new look and feel to it that we think will be more applicable to the U.S. market.

Looks like we finally have a name for what we have been calling "Lineage 3D" and "Lineage 1 1/2". Lineage Forever seems to be [one of] the upgrade[s] to Lineage that will start after Episode 12.

Man, this is why we are getting all the messed up updates. They want to easy us into their messed up game. We loved Lineage how it was. Revert it back to the way we loved it and not with these stupid updates on exp, pot delay, and ac damage.

So I guess they want to reset the future to include as much drudgery as possible. LOL... they noticed people were having lots of fun in Lineage 1 and it irked them. Now they want to continue this madness to other games? Ugh... someone needs to nerf them.

OMG... they want to have Global Monitors to share info on "Bad Players" amongst all the gaming companies? Someone please nerf the Garriott brothers. They are out of control... LOL

I agree with many people, some of my thoughts is some games don't need to be changed much in order to be fun or better. Millions still play UO and I thought that game sux because of the poor graphics, but yet many people play. 3D may look nice in some games.. how sure how it will go for Lineage but 3D will surely lose many current customers where it will require a better pc to run Lineage. I perhaps probably need a video card and more RAM.

So Lineage Forever is going to replace the current lineage? If it is... I suggest having the old lineage and this "lineage forever" seperate so customers can choose which they would perfer to play, and NC still updating or fixing both or 1 of em.

Anyways NC should put their concentration on the current Lineage.

It's understandable that by the time Lineage 2 is out (or almost out), and ep. 12 is old news, and all of the other MMO's are out to compete with, that they would try to update the graphics of this game.

They could do it like UO and be an "optional" update, but that doesn't really fit their style, and I kind of like the level playing field of everyone having the same visual experience. Besides, by that time more computers are going to have the firepower to run the modest 3D graphics I feel they will add in Lineage Forever.

I would be happy with Diablo 2 style graphics for a MMO. Right now Lineage isn't even to Diablo 1 standards. But I still prefer the top down perspective to 1st or 3rd person, and from what I can see the all of the competition will not be top down. That would leave them a good foothold to work from.

If they don't screw it all up before then...

Sohl ... FYI in most games now, the top down perspective is one of your options. The advanced camera movements are another. For instance, in Priston Tale when you hit "Z" you cycle through your camera options. In the Locked position it is Top Down view. Also, this is standard on most newer MMORPG's. I think I remember hearing that WoW will have these options as well.

I think NCsoft-US is making horrible mistakes QA wise and creating 80% of the bugs , by the way they test. My band of misfits and outcast , break things daily 99% don't even care enough to report things.
I see daily , people duping items , double sending , speed hacks , potion hacks... I stop reporting that stuff after Hurely mess (spelling on its name) and Test server mess.

I am going to start talking more to Amer, I don't have time for NCsoft-US's BS , the potion delay to me was a nail in Lineage's heart , sieges are horrible, only high Hp people can take part. Hunting with prince , or mage with low con is unplayable.

I am looking forward to Cityofheroes.. but if NCsoft runs it like they do Lineage then I guess , I will goto the UK and play Dragon Empire , or that Island game....

i love the 2d way of lineage but i know that 90% of the reason nobody comes (who have patience to dl it) is because walking speed and attack speed is so slow

Nah, Lineage is the fastest playing game around. Nothing moves faster than a haste/braved knight. Ever played games like Dark Age of Camelot? my god, that's a slow game after you play a knight

don't diss him, because he knows what he's talking about. until recently was still a problem in hk server, and the settings of that server is much closer to the korean settings than ours is.

btw if mel reads this, i'd like to know why do i gain hp faster pumping reds than oranges? i can't be sure, but my brother was hunting gnoll elder on test and said that reds kept him alive while oranges let him die... that's just plain absurd.

OK, just to set the record straight, LINEAGE FOREVER, is Lineage: the blood pledge in 3d, IE no changes, except for visually, (thats what i would assume since it says: "It's an attempt to take the whole "Lineage" system and add a new look and feel to it that we think will be more applicable to the U.S. market.") and also, if lineage: the blood pledge lags for you, you really need a new computer, i mean, if lineage doesnt run fine on your comp, something is *FUCKED UP* and you need a new one.. also to lady british, thats because oranges have more of a delay then reds do (i think they posted something about it, or someone did) clears/oranges have like a 1 second delay more then reds, so whats the point to using reds as opposed to oranges? nothing. wasting more money.

Broadband so fast..i do not htink so i was using broadband and i lagged like hell i couldnt even seige or defend my self from pks cause as soon as alot of t hings where happing ide get hit by lag. Now with cable i ahvent had any lag at all and seiges are defiantley more better i dont die in them do to lag yipee!!. O and one other thing why cant NC work to keep vets and newbies here why just one?!?!? can anyone tell me this. From what all i can see is that nc is trying to get rid of all the vets like Ac reduction to elfs prince and mages. Pot delay and what ever else that comes to there mind. If they belive that it is going to do good for the game they are wrong very wrong.

WizSnake there is a way to dupe the COI , currently only a handful of pledges are doing on Test. I seen it a few times on Dep , but people aren't very smart, they simply are "Monkey see, Monkey do" types.

There are still alot of expolitable "things" in Lineage, thankfully people on Dep , don't mess around much, so it been very limited. On Test its another story completely but you can't ruin Test.

Ok, I'm confused. Lineage Forever and Lineage: The Blood Pledge is it going to be two different game, or is it going to be a BIG patch for Lineage: The Blood Pledge? Is this happening in Korea also? If this Lineage Forever thing isn't going to happen in Korea. I know this Lineage Forever going to be a Lineage: The Blood Pledge rip off for sure. I'm surely going to quit if is going to be a rip off trying to despair into that UO game. I guess that Lord British guy or Robert Garriot doing a good job doing it. Sighs..... Just do it how the Korean servers always do it, or just make another server thats a Korean-English Server.

Nc-Austin are the ones creating the 3d client. It's gonna be a big 'patch' on Lineage - Rather than a seperate game. See it as a graphical upgrade like the Newbie Area's.

Anyways, I'm reckoning it's more to westernise the game and keep the graphics inline with competing MMORPG's coming out in America (and Europe) than for the Koreans.

Wissnake the man was right... There is a lot of speed hacks. I have a potion hack, speed hack, duping hacks, and I also can i have infinite adena. It is quite simple to hack into a game IP if u merge your own Ip with his, and i've used all those hacks and still use it. How do u think I have so much money and -79 ac?

Man people whine too much. Lineage Forever is not a new concept. They were planning on having a 3d graphics client for lineage created long before Garriott was ever involved with lineage. In fact there have been comments made about it since before episode 8, but the goal was to complete the original episodes and *then* improve the graphics engine. After which they have at least four (six?) more episodes planned for post-graphics update. So, if Garriott and NC Austin are working on the new graphics engine, I'm assuming that was something discussed when Garriott and NC teamed up in the first place. Also for those of you whining about not wanting to change Lineage graphics...it's not going 3d as in 1st person perspective (i.e. evercrack), it will keep the visual perspective we currently have but using 3d models rather than sprites (ala diablo 2). You wonder why they begin to ignore peoples complaints? If I had to deal with a constant bombardment of irritating users bitching and moaning about how everything in the game that doesnt immediately make *them* stronger, I think I would begin to just stop listening all together as well... try picking and choosing what you complain about. Why complain that you got pk'd and therefore knights are too strong, or you got 2:1 and killed, and therefore potion delay is unfair... try learning how to play the game before you start complaining. The story behind lineage is basically that the world is in chaos. In chaos the rule of life is survival of the fittest. If you can't handle not being the absolute strongest player in the game, then quit, or adapt. Survival of the fittest means adapt or die. I suggest you choose which you want to do.

Seems to me that they are trying for true game balance....but then again, I've been playing rpg's since 76...and have worked on some paper and pen games, so I can see the direction they're going....I agree, the pot delay needs to be fixed...my suggestion, if they're gonna keep it is make the oranges and the clears more effective...IE more healing when using them..that should balance it out. As far as the rest, I personally prefer the top down view, and I still feel that from all the games out there, we've got the best right here. Instead of being so negative about the "percieved" problems, try and make some constructive suggestions......but in every online game I've ever played, the whiners are usually the ones that post the most....lol

Quick addendum....good arguement there BavmordaX...nice to see someone else not afraid to go against the tide of whiners...<<grin>>

Alitar [#47] - Since NC themselves won't/can't comment on the direction they're taking, maybe you can share what you think they're doing? I have to admit that it doesn't make much sense to me, but I don't have the experience with RPGs that you do. Specifically, why the nerfing of non-knight classes? To my thinking, those classes were already weak enough. And having played pen & dice games myself, I'm flabbergasted at the decision to make AC work in different ways for different classes.

And I prefer top-down view as well, but I think the addition of 3d models to it is a great idea. I think ppl need to thik before whining. For an example of what 3d models with advanced camera action can do, check out Myth from Bungie. That's a kickass engine that will run easily on modern computers.

I must say that I am also working on a project, something "similar" to Lineage :). Actually I have been for some time already. And just as you, I am 18 years old and just about heading for university, of course programming :)

Maybe we could later join up, though I'm not sure... I will have to speak to my friend, since we are doing it together. I will contact you when school starts again, so that I will have more guidelines about how the project is to be done at school...

Actually I think we could do a better game, since we are the ones playing the game and know what is fun and not...

I love the fact that everyone is now interested in creating there own games. The legacy that will be brought about by all this nerfing is some realy good thought and creativness.

As for BavmordaX and Altair, you guys keep playing and when the servers close down cause everyone else quit according to your piss poor advice. Don't come back whining to us cause you have no game.

Bavmor... If I had the arrogant disdain for players like you, I would want to ignore the backlash as well. Perhaps you can enlighten us ignorant whiners as to what a real game should be. But first, tell me the 1 other game, either computer, console, or pen and paper that you've played that had different meanings for ac for different races. Wake up and smell the poorly thought out nerf.

I have been trying to get the e-mails I recieved into a mailing list, but I keep running into problem after problem...
But after I get it working i'll use it to inform the people that were interested in the game about different things.

Also, about joining up with others on a game, you're not the first to ask, but right now that's not really something I want to do, but i'll think about it.

3D games give me headaches >.<;; Even diabolo... I remember if I played for more than a few hours I'd wanna throw up. I hope they dun change it.. Q_Q And those 1st person perspective games... like cs and stuff... omg I can't even take 10 secs of that game.. when I'm at my bf's house and I accidentally look at his screen I start feeling sick right away >.<

One of the points I was trying to make is that for many, the game had become too easy..face it, when you are a high level character, mops fall fast..with all the uber items that most of you oldtimers have. All they've done is made the game more of a challenge in my eyes...as far as the ac, I agree with most of you..that makes no sense at all to me. As far as balance, the changes in summon for instance....summon mages with 18 charisma getting up to a dozen bbs at times was giving mages a total advantage.....so they got rich, and the rest of the classes suffered due to it...so they changed it..and the complaining commenced. The thing is, Mages standing in and hacking like a knight totally invalidates the concept of the mage and lessens the effect that magic has in the game. that might be the motivation behind the ac changes...personally, I think that mages in particular, instead of changing the way ac works, should just not have gotten the dex bonus's that other classes get. In AD&D, for instance, certain character classes get penalties for ac, dex, etc..along with certain character races....that would have been a better way for nci to handle that methinks......one good thing though..if well thought out complaints are vented, we will get better responses from nci..but when all people do is complain without trying to offer valid ideas, THAT is whining...and they don't pay much attention to that from what I've seen. Oh, and a quick note to aupairking: Complaining about something in a constructive manner isn't whining...however, complaining about something just cuz it makes the game too hard for your lazy butt...now THAT is whining.

i think nc is just using us. they want to make other games as well. they experimentate what players like and dislike. this way they wanna make a popular game and earn lotta money on it. not fair nc!!
