Lineage rated 18+ in Korea
Reported on news.naver.com (http://news.naver.com/news_read.php?oldid=2002101700000354044&s=41,130,334&e=103,207,409):

The Korean-equivalent of the ESRB, (which, in the US, rates game content such as T for Teen, M for Mature, etc) has rated Lineage 18+, to NC's dissappointment. This means that game rooms in Korea (which is where a large majority of Lineage players play) will now not allow players to play Lineage if they are not 18 years old.

NC said that they were hoping for a 12+ rating, and have been changing content to make it more teen-friendly, such as Lineage Tournament to curb real-life violence, graphics changes, etc. Some of the reasons cited by the ratings group were addiction, violence and gambling/real-money trades.

30% of Korean Lineage players are 14 or younger, which is quite a large number of players. The article did not mention the impact of this change on other countries, or what NC was planning to do about it.

I'm also interested to know what kind of "gambling" is going on?

If lineage is rated 18+ in Korea, games like Grand Theft Auto would probably get a XXX rating there LOL

They said 30% are 14 and under not to mention how many are 17 and under. This could have some huge impacts on lineage in Korea.

What happens to all the characters owned by these "kids".
How much will this impact the bottem line for NC Interactive.
What will NC do to save, reverse or appeal this decision? Eliminate the gambling? I disagree that a game should be rated 18+ because it's addicting or in their words, "violent". Lineage graphic doesn't allow the the game to "graphically violent" except maybe Linage 2.

Finally, we'll see how this affects u.s.

For the record, this is going to be hard to implament regardless.

hah poor wittle korean kiddies, the gambling comes from the dog races and slime race thesimbul dont tell me you've never tried them out? slime races used to be the place to be at nite time everynite time in lineage, no one goes there anymore tho :(. this game is hardly 18+ tho, they should trash that rating and let the kiddies play!

"I'm also interested to know what kind of "gambling" is going on?"

Keep in mind this is korean servers and dog race and slime race is very popular there (since there's people who actually play it and you do win money). That is not gambling in your books?

Now i'm wondering what lin2's rating will be. It's like a half assed pr0n movie without the nekkidness o.O

Guys, this is not the end of the world for NC. All the article said is that ppl under the age of 18 will not be able to play Lineage in the game rooms anymore. Well, look at blockbuster, they have a rule where they arent allowed to rent Mature games to ppl under 18, but I guarantee you that the kids still get the game somehow. People under 18 will still be able to play at home. The above 18 thing is only a rating. Even if it did come to the US servers it wouldnt affect most of us, since most of us play at home. In korean it will have a bigger impact b/c alot ppl play in the game room, but I'm guessing that if these kids are so "addicted" to the game they will either convince their parents to buy them a compoter so they can play at home, or head out looking for a fake ID ^.^
In my opinion NC will get past this with relative ease. But as always, I could be wrong.

The dynamic is very different here as it is in Korea.
If I understand correctly a large majority of Korean players play from a game room, which adds to the allure of a MMO... Therefore if people are strict and regulators start raiding game rooms, there will be a huge decline of players...

I am not sure what contributes to the delinquency of a minor there, but the level of addictive you will find in most good games. The violence exists, but it exists in a lot of games. I could see PVP though as a huge no no. Because killing a gnoll is one thing, but plotting to kill the guy next to you is something entirely different. There have also been numerous gang related beatings because of Lineage. So who knows...

But Lineage is no different from any other MMO or fighting video game.

As for gambling.. well BAH! R/L buying and trading... who knows...

I kind of agree with what Radiation was trying to say: I wonder how much of the childish, racist behavior and stealing would stop if the game was 18+ only.

And as a warning to the people who love to overreact about matters of age: I'm not saying ALL of the people who are under 18 are like this -- the majority of LC staff is under 18 after all ;)

i dont know if someone said this but... If you were in a game room with someone and you PKed him he would come and punch that guy so if he was a boy... you get it do you? And that thing about 18+ is bad. Get the violence out? How? Let the violence in and make it 13+ pls.. bout the time you do that all 12 boys/girls o.O will get 13 ... ^_^... Like I did...

These ratings has to be enforced to be effective. ESRB is basically useless since kiddies can get a game over the counter without having their IDs being checked. Only when there's laws to the offenders to the cafes would make these cafes enforce the 18+ only people playing.

i liked NeoCross's answer the best LOL!

this won't affect the US-resident players that much at all. the proof of being 18+ is when you sign up with a credit card.... and i don't know of a whole lot of americans playing in game rooms, i can't speak for the canadians etc. though.
besides, i think that each countrie's version of ESRB would work independently, meaning while korea's version says the game is 18+ age, canada's might only say 13+, or US might say ~whatever. basically what i am getting at is even though korea ESRB says 18+, doesnt govern all the other countrie's.

#7 Exactly.

Please, Please NC, if you're not going to enforce the 18+ rule here, can you at least give us and Age 18+ only server? That would be so great. Or maybe you could, make people pass a proficiency to be on a special server?

NC will only lose about 40% of their empire if this turns ugly. And by ugly, I mean good. Because then we'll most likely have less thieves and all the rest.

Hmm....... poor Koreans..... I don't know if anyone is thinking about this... well... in this way, but this may have an affect on us. Think, if NC has to lower violence ratings for Korea, they may have to change it for us too.
So far... well as far as I have seen, anything that happens to Lineage for Korea affects us in one way or another. In forums, in the game, outside the game (for whom I can't really say). I can understand about the addiction. This game can get VERY distracting and cause people to start getting worse grades in school, even cutting school just to play. As said many times before, Lineage is an addictive game. Period.
About violence.... well..... that is debatable. Violence is an issue that can be solved many ways:
A: Take blood out totally
B: Same as A but replace all characters with fuzzy pink and blue bunnies with oversized carrots as well
C: Change the face of the game (remove most violent aspects)
D: Same as C but more GMs to monitor not only global chat but whispers, and maybe even regular chat.
E: Well... OK I am out of ideas for now.

About in-game/out-game trades and gambling, that can not be helped.
Any gane can produce the same effectson any one person. This really should not be an issue unless people are loosing eyes, ears, arms, legs, or their life.

Ok I think im done :)

some1 16yrs old dude just jumped of a 20storie building in hk couple days ago,cuz his online game acc got hacked, and lost him "super weapon"

Well ESRB has rated lineage with a teen rating in north america, just look at your ep 11 cd covers (if u actually got it ^^) though i guess korean rating system is different from that one, but the violence and whatnot in lineage is a lot tamer than in some games u can buy in america (GTA3, UT, Max Payne, most fps's for that matter ^^) and others.
